About Abalone Bio

 

Abalone Bio is a San Francisco Bay Area, pre-clinical stage biotechnology company developing antibody drugs for G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and other membrane protein targets. We are developing our own therapeutics and partnering with pharmaceutical companies to discover drug candidates for their targets. 

 

Our distinctive technology is a functional antibody discovery platform that combines cell-based enrichment, high throughput sequencing and data-driven computational hit identification. We directly search for antibodies that can modulate the function of receptor targets, rather than first finding binders and then further screening for function. We find ultra-rare antibodies that have unique functional properties that enable us to address previously untreatable diseases.

 

Our most advanced panel of antibodies are agonists for a GPCR involved in pain, inflammation and fibrosis. Our lead molecule suppressed pain in a mouse model of chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain, and has therapeutic potential in a host of other diseases. We are testing these antibodies in other disease models, and are developing candidates for other high-value target receptors in cancer and rare diseases.

Location

Our facilities are in the East Bay (Richmond, CA). We are fully equipped for molecular biology, microbiology, tissue culture, flow cytometry, and cell-based assays work.

 

Environment

The Scientist will join a 6-8 person cross-functional R&D team. At least weekly, the full team discusses experimental results, future plans, and priorities.

Advisors and consultants routinely interact with the lab scientists, in the lab, by email or in meetings. 

 

Founders/managers regularly hold one-on-one meetings to hear every team member’s concerns and thoughts, discuss and set clear expectations, and provide constructive feedback.

Qualifications/Experience

Required:

  • Ph.D. degree 

  • At least 1 year of biotech industry experience

  • 5 or more years of hands-on research lab experience.

 

Areas of expertise:

The ideal candidate has substantial first-hand experience in most or all of these areas:

  • Classical and modern genetic and strain engineering techniques (cloning, Gibson, CRISPR, in vivo homologous recombination, etc.) 

  • Yeast cell-based assays, microscopy, and flow cytometry

  • Biochemical assays (ELISAs, other plate-based kits and assays)

  • Antibody library design; antibody engineering, production, and purification

  • GPCR signaling, G proteins, and related science

 

Additional experience in the following is strongly preferred:

  • Recombinant protein purification and analysis

  • Mammalian cell culture, engineering, and cell-based assays

  • Other antibody discovery techniques, especially phage or yeast surface display

  • Bioinformatics, NGS sequencing and analysis.

  • Computational skills, including data analysis using R or Python; shell scripting; development of new computational workflows

  • Preclinical assays (animal model experimental design and interpretation)

The RA will optimize and use Abalone Bio’s yeast-based antibody discovery technology platform to find antibody drug candidates, and work to optimize and characterize antibodies with in vitro and in vivo assays.
